The present dissertation titled “Emphasizing Evidence-Based Comparison of Race in the United States and Caste in India” is an academic endeavor to examine two of the most enduring and structurally embedded systems of social stratification in human society. Both caste and race have historically operated as mechanisms of exclusion, discrimination, and privilege, shaping socioeconomic hierarchies and influencing political and legal frameworks across generations. While caste has been deeply rooted in the Indian subcontinent’s cultural and religious traditions, race has been the defining feature of the American social fabric, particularly since the colonial and post-slavery eras. Despite their distinct origins, both phenomena continue to raise profound questions concerning equality, justice, and human rights.
The purpose of this study is to undertake a comprehensive and evidence-based comparative analysis of these two systems, focusing on their historical evolution, socio-legal implications, and the measures adopted to combat their effects through law and policy. The study highlights how both India and the United States have employed constitutional mandates, statutory interventions, judicial interpretations, and international commitments to address systemic discrimination and promote social justice. The research also explores the intersections between caste and race within the broader framework of international human rights discourse, contributing to the growing body of scholarship that seeks to understand inequality as a global phenomenon rather than a context-specific occurrence.
